Exploring Indiana Dunes State and National Parks

Tom and I enjoyed a day and a half visiting the Indiana Dunes area at the southern tip of Lake Michigan. We camped one night at Indiana Dunes State Park which is a convenient location for exploring both Indiana Dunes State Park and Indiana Dunes National Park.

Camping at Indiana Dunes State Park

Indiana Dunes State Park Campground is a beautiful campground located near the southwest edge of the state park.

The campground has spacious campsites with picnic tables, fire pits, and electric hookups. It also has restroom/shower facilities, an RV dump station, and a small store.

Exploring Indiana Dunes State Park

Indiana Dunes State Park is surrounded by Lake Michigan on one side and Indiana Dunes National Park on the other sides. The park includes a long beautiful strip of beach along the Lake and a network of hiking and biking trails throughout the park. One of the most popular hikes is the 3 Dune Challenge. It's a loop hike that is less than 1.5 miles long with just a little more than 200 feet elevation gain. Most of the elevation gain, and the challenge, comes from hiking up and down three sand dunes: Mt. Jackson, Mt. Holden, and Mt. Tom.

Exploring Indiana Dunes National Park

Indiana Dunes National Park surrounds the state park on three sides and offers simliar attractions including beautiful beaches, hiking, and biking trails. The National Park also offers some unique attractions including the 1933 World's Fair Century of Progress Homes.
