Wheels Up for Ecuador Day 17

On Day 17 of my trip to Ecuador, Sierra and I enjoyed the sand and snorkeling near Puerto Baquerizo Moreno on Isla San Cristobal.

Puerto Baquerizo Moreno

We picked up sandwiches in the morning as we walked from our hotel toward the beach. We couldn't help but stop along the boardwalk to watch the baby sea lions playing and rolling in the surf. One mamma attempted, multiple times, to pick up her struggling baby with her mouth and nudge it onto the rocks. After finally pulling ourselves away from the baby sea lions, Sierra and I walked abut 25 minutes from the boardwalk in Puerto Baquerizo Moreno to Playa Punta Carola.

Playa Punta Carola

Playa Punta Carola is a beautiful beach on a bay with a jetty to a small lighthouse. The lava rocks that line much of the shallow bay provide a great environment for snorkeling. We swam with sea lions, sea turtles, and plenty of fish. The visibility wasn't great but, because it's so shallow, snorkeling is still nice. After enjoying several hours and our sandwiches on the beach, we walked about 10 minutes to Muelle Tijeretas.

Muelle Tijeretas

Muelle Tijeretas is a dock at the edge of a rocky bay. Visitors share the dock with sea lions for sunbathing and entering the bay. The water was much clearer than Playa Punta Carola and the snorkeling was fantastic. We swam with sea lions, sea turtles, and colorful fish of all sizes.

Expenses

I'm doing my best to track expenses in this spreadsheet for anyone that's interested in a similar, relatively low-budget trip.

Ecuador Fun Fact

Galápagos was the very first location to be named a UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) World Heritage site. That was in 1978. As of 2023, there are 1199 UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
