Wheels Up for Ecuador Day 22

On Day 22 of my trip to Ecuador, Sierra and I traveled from Baños to Otavalo.

Banos

We originally planned to catch an early bus out of Banos because we had a long drive to our next destination. But, we wanted to see Luna (aka the dog) after her surgery that morning. Sierra and I walked around Banos and explored areas we hadn't yet seen. We stopped in to see Luna as soon as she got out of surgery and we hung out while the anesthesia wore off. The vet is very confident that Luna will fully recover from her injuries. And, with any luck, she'll be hiking through the Colorado Rockies, away from busy streets, in a few months.

Baños to Otavalo

Sierra and I caught the 2pm bus from Baños to Quito. It took about 4 hours but the bus was very comfortable with seats that recline quite far back. In Quito we transferred to another bus bound for Otavalo. That was another 3 hours. The total fare for each of us was about 9 dollars. The bus system in Ecuador is very good and affordable.

Otavalo

We didn't arrive in Otavalo until after 9pm. After a short taxi ride to our hotel, Sierra and I were ready for bed. It had been a long day of traveling!

Expenses

I'm doing my best to track expenses in this spreadsheet for anyone that's interested in a similar, relatively low-budget trip.

Ecuador Fun Fact

Banos is one of the best places in Ecuador to sample and buy Ecuadorian candy. You can't miss the rows of candy stands and fresh sugar cane stalks across from the bus terminal. And, if you're lucky you can watch one of the local candy makers stretching and pulling Melcocha, their famous sugarcane taffy.
