Cannon Beach, Oregon or Bust Day 18

On Day 18 of our RV trip to Cannon Beach, Oregon, Tom and I drove from our boondocking site at the Oak Creek Wildlife Area in Washington to Fort Stevens State Park in Oregon.

Sights along the way

From the Oak Creek Wildlife Area, we followed Highway 12 along the Tieton River past Rimrock Lake and Dog Lake then over White Pass. The views were beautiful in every direction as we entered Mount Rainier National Park. We originally planned to spend a full day in the park but after a quick stop at the Ohanepecosh Visitor Center, I realized one day wouldn't do it justice. We didn't have enough time to adequately see Mount Rainier National Park on this trip so we decided to postpone it for a future trip and push on to the Oregon Coast.

Tom and I passed several more beautiful lakes along Highway 12 before heading south on Interstate 5. We crossed the Columbia River via the Lewis & Clark Bridge. A huge lumber mill is on the Washington side just before crossing the bridge into Oregon.

As we headed west on Highway 30, Tom couldn't resist a stop at the Berry Patch to investigate their homemade pies. I think it was just an excuse to stop for lunch. He ate a sandwich and passed on the pies.

We found a campsite for the night at Fort Stevens State Park. It's located on the Oregon Coast at the mouth of the Columbia River. It's a big beautiful campground with lots of trees and paved bike/walking paths. The campsites aren't as spacious as most state campgrounds we've visited, but with all the trees and vegetation, they're still relatively private. Tom and I rode our bikes to the beach and almost as far north as the Columbia River. When we returned to the campground, we passed several elk. We enjoyed a glowing campfire before heading south along the coast to Cannon Beach, our official "destination" before starting our trip home.
