Cannon Beach, Oregon or Bust Day 4

On Day 4 of our RV trip to Cannon Beach, Oregon, Tom and I drove approximately 130 miles from Cody, Wyoming to West Yellowstone, Montana. We intentionally choose to spend the night in Cody so we could get an early morning start driving west through Yellowstone National Park. We did this on a previous trip and it proved to be a great way to enjoy a drive through Yellowstone without having to fight the crowds.

Sights along the way

It was still dark when Tom and I pulled out of the Cody Elks Lodge in the morning. By the time we reached the many tunnels approaching Buffalo Bill Reservoir, it was just starting to get light. We had plenty of daylight as we entered Yellowstone National Park and passed beautiful Sylvan Lake. But, a dense haze over Yellowstone Lake obscured our views of the surrounding mountains. Whitecaps made Yellowstone Lake look more like an ocean.

Tom and I stopped for breakfast along Grand Loop Road with beautiful views of Yellowstone River. After breakfast, as we followed Grand Loop Road along Yellowstone River, we saw bison and geysers. Aly enjoyed the views as much as we did... especially the bison! We eventually turned away from Yellowstone River and followed the Madison River out of Yellowstone National Park, through the town of West Yellowstone, Montana and on to our next adventure... fishing the Madison River.

Madison River

The Madison River is a premier flyfishing destination and Tom rarely misses an opportunity to fish it when we're passing through Montana. To ensure he had easy access to the river, we booked a night at Cabin Creek Campground just below Hebgen Lake. We walked from our campsite to the Madison River. Tom enjoyed catching rainbow trout while Aly enjoyed digging in the mud for sticks.
