Des Moines or Bust Day 5

On Day 5 of our RV trip to Des Moines, Iowa, Tom and I veered off Highway 90 to drive the Badlands Loop through Badlands National Park. After visiting the park we continued our drive east on Highway 90 to the small town of Oacoma, South Dakota where we found a great place to boondock on the banks of the Missouri River.

Sights along the way

When we approached the Pinnacle's Entrance Station on the north side of Badlands National Park, we noticed many RVs parked along a foggy ridge on the east side of Highway 240. It looks like a great place to boondock conveniently close to the park. As we continued our drive east on Highway 90 after visiting Badlands National Park, we drove past corn and hay fields as far as the eyes could see.

Exploring Badlands National Park

Tom and I drove approximately 30 miles drive along the Badlands Loop between the Pinnacles Entrance and the Northeast Entrance. We stopped at most of the scenic pullouts along the way and enjoyed beautiful views of the spires, canyons and grasslands. We even saw a herd of bighorn sheep.

After a quick stop at the Ben Reifel Visitor Center near the Northeast Entrance, Tom and I were back on the road.

Boondocking on the Missouri River

We arrived at Oacoma Flats on the banks of the Missouri River just before 6pm. It's a beautiful boondocking spot and we were surprised to be the only ones there on a Saturday night. It seemed too good to be true but a sign along the road clearly indicates camping up to 7 days is allowed. While I captured drone video of our perfect campsite, Tom took a dip in the Missouri River.
