Des Moines or Bust Day 8

On Day 8 of our RV trip to Des Moines, Iowa, we focused on the primary purpose of our trip... getting our new weight distribution tag trailer installed. After a quick and successful installation and weight-check, Tom and I enjoyed a relaxing afternoon exploring Altoona, Iowa.

Weight Distribution Tag Trailer

Our tag-trailer manufacturer/installer/boondocking hosts had already built most of our trailer before we arrived. They used standard specs for our truck and camper to get the design as close as possible. Since every rig is a little different, however, they tweaked and optimized the trailer for our rig after we arrived. Tom lended a hand where he could. I helped by staying out the way and taking pictures.

After reloading our camper, we ran our rig across the scales at a local weight station twice to determine the weight on all three axels. Mission accomplished! Our weight is now appropriately distributed across three axels and, as a bonus, we finally have a place to store a spare tire! We've been pushing our luck on every trip because we had no place for the spare.

Exploring Altoona

With the main purpose of our trip completed, Tom an I were ready to relax... and eat! We invited our hosts to lunch at the nearby casino buffet. They spoke highly of it but hadn't been there in years. Unfortunately we learned that the casino buffet never reopened after COVID. So, we settled for the next best buffet. Pizza Ranch. It wasn't bad and we were starving!

We slept half the afternoon in a food-induced coma. Then, feeling guilty for eating and sleeping the day away, Tom and I rode our bikes for the first time on this trip. We explored the many trails that crisscross the town of Altoona and visited the Enabling Garden and Korean/Vietnam Memorial along the way.

Here are some photos of our tag trailer and bicycle ride thorugh Altoona. At Pizza Ranch we were too busy stuffing ourselves with pizza and salad to take photos!
