Driving from Twillingate to St Johns

After a beautiful time in Twillingate, Tom and I continued our journey east toward St. Johns. We drove south on Route 340 for a short distance then southeast on Route 331 to connect with Route 330. Route 330 led us south to Gander and the Trans-Canada Highway, Route 1. We backtracked a little on Route 1 going as far west as Grand Falls before continuing east to St. Johns.

Traveling from Twillingate to Gander

The first part of our drive from Twillingate to Gander was beautiful as bridges led us across many islands and along Gander Bay. We were never far from water but the more inland we drove, the less we could see the water through the dense vegetation. After exploring Gander and backtracking a bit to camp at Notre Dame Provincial Park and explore Bishop's Falls and Grand Falls, Tom and I continued to St. Johns.

Traveling from Gander to St. Johns

As Tom and I drove along Route 1 from Gander to St. Johns, we noticed work crews clearing wide bands of trees along both sides of the highway. Given the many moose warning signs we'd seen, we guessed the clearing is to help prevent moose accidents.

Route 1 led us through small communities, like Gambo, that I'd just read about in one of the many Gander 9/11 books. It also led us through Terra Nova National Park where Tom and I stopped briefly at the Visitor Centre. I had hoped to explore the park but the weather was cool and gloomy... plus we needed a break from the Battle of the Bugs. So, after a short visit and lunch at Sandy Pond, we continued through the park to Newfoundland's capital city, St. Johns. We were ready to experince the Big City and it didn't take long for us to run into our first traffic jam on the island. Driving through downtown wasn't fun with our big truck but we were happy to finally make it to the east end of the Trans-Canada Highway.
