Driving Route 1 from Port aux Basques to Deer Lake, Newfoundland

The Trans-Canada Highway, which starts in Victoria, British Columbia, on Canada’s west coast, and ends in St. John’s, on the east coast of Newfoundland. It includes an 8 hour ferry ride from North Sydney, Nova Scotia to Port aux Basques, Newfoundland where it follows Route 1 to St John’s.

Tom and I followed Route 1 north as far as Deer Lake before turning off to follow the Viking Trail.

From the moment the ferry entered the harbor, the landscape was breathtaking. The weather was noticeably cooler than Nova Scotia but the sun was shining with mostly blue skies.

Our first stop was the Newfoundland/Labrador Visitor Center to pick up local maps and information. Signs along the highway guided us to the proper exit just a few minutes from the ferry terminal. During our short stop at the visitor center, we learned that some icebergs are still visible along the Great Northern Peninsula but may not be around much longer. And, just like that, we decided in which direction to head first!

Tom and I stopped about 90 minutes up Route 1 to camp and explore Barachois Pond Provincial Park. We took a short detour, from the park to Stephensville, so Tom could get a fishing license.

After our few days Exploring Barachois Pond Provincial Park, a rainstorm rolled in and we decided it was a good time to put some miles behind us as we headed for the icebergs. We followed Route 1 north to Deer Lake. At that point Route 1 turns east. Tom and I continued north on the Viking Trail towards St Anthony.
