Exploring Driftwood Provincial Park, Ontario

After two days of driving from Michigan to Ontario, Tom and I took a break with a few nights at Driftwood Provincial Park along the Ottawa River in Ontario.

Camping at Driftwood Provincial Park

Driftwood Provincial Park has more than 80 campsites, half of which are directly on the riverbank. Each site has a picnic table and fire pit and some sites, away from the river, have electric hookups. Water faucets and vault toilets are scattered throughout the campground plus there's a very nice shower/restroom facility. An RV dumpstation and trash dumpsters are located near the entrance to the park. Other amenities include hiking trails, a swim beach, and a boat launch.

Tom and I chose site #45. During our 2-night stay at Driftwood Provincial Park, we enjoyed hiking and kayaking as well as a campfire and beautiful sunsets.

Hiking at Driftwood Provincial Park

From our campsite, we followed a short trail through the woods to the swim beach. At the opposite end of the swim beach is a trailhead for the Oak Highland Trails. We hiked along the loop trails for almost 2 miles. On our way back we stopped at the swim beach to cool off. It was a beautiful morning and we were surprised to have the beach all to ourselves.

Kayaking at Driftwood Provincial Park

Tom and I unloaded and inflated our kayaks right after we parked at our campsite. Unloading and loading them from the top of our camper isn't exactly hard but it's certainly not easy. So, we always want to make it worth the trouble when we unload them. That's why we chose the campsite that we did. It was right by the water enabling us to leave our kayaks on the shore but within sight of our camper.

Tom and I used our kayaks four or five times during our 2 nights at the park. Aly loved kayaking to the beach to play fetch. When she stayed at camp, to rest from the intense playing, Tom and I kayaked farther. I even kayaked all the way from Ontario to Quebec. Granted, Quebec is just across the river, but the Ottawa River is really big!

During our last evening of kayaking, we saw a loon. At first we followed it for a bit. Aly was particularly interested. Then, after the loon ducked under the water and we kayaked passed, it followed us to our campsite. Maybe it was just as interested as we were!
