Exploring Elliston, Newfoundland

After boondocking for a week, our refrigerator was having a hard time keeping everything cold. Unsure whether it was a problem with the refrigerator or our power supply, Tom and I decided to find a campground near the tip of the Bonavista Peninsula so we could plug into power. The campground we found, in Elliston, was perfect for viewing puffins… not to mention root cellars!

Camping at Elliston Municipal Park

Elliston Municipal Park is a small campground and event venue. It’s across the street from a small sandy beach with a dairy bar. The big draw for this campground, however, is the nearby puffin and root cellar viewing site. Soon after arriving at the campground, we learned the annual Puffin Festival starts that weekend at the municipal park. We stayed two nights and might have stayed another night, for the festival, if we didn’t already have tickets to the dinner theatre in Trinity.

The campsites are relatively small but ours had a bit of open space on one side for a little privacy.

Viewing Root Cellars and Puffins, Puffins, Puffins

While camping in Elliston, Tom and I rode our bikes a few minutes up the road to the Puffin Viewing Site. It’s one of many stops on the Newfoundland Discovery Trail that are designated UNESCO sites. The flagstone cliffs provide a great habitat for puffin nesting. And flagstones from the cliffs and surrounding areas provide perfect building blocks for root cellars, thus making Elliston “the Root Cellar Capital of the World”.

The views from the Puffin Viewing Site were spectacular. The rugged coast and rock formations were beautiful enough. The countless puffins and seagulls were icing on the flagstone cake! In fact, all that bird poop kind of looks like icing! Speaking of bird poop, I inadvertently caught an action shot of one puffin taking direct aim at another puffins face. Poor puffin! But it makes me laugh every time!

Biking between Elliston and Maberly

Before leaving our campground in Elliston, Tom and I rode our bikes a short distance along the Discovery Trail to Maberly. We enjoyed beautiful views of the rugged coast as we learned more about the local history.
