Exploring Trinity, Newfoundland

Our first stop on the Bonavista Peninsula was to hike the Skerwink Trail in East Trinity. While boondocking near the trailhead on Wednesday, Tom and I bought tickets for the Saturday night dinner theatre in Trinity.

Boondocking at the Skerwink Trailhead

Tom and I arrived at the Skerwink trailhead in the evening after exploring the Irish Loop on the Avalon Peninsula. We were fortunate to find a boondocking spot near this popular hiking trail. Our boondocking site wasn’t particularly private or exceptionally beautiful but it was convenient and we had lupines blooming all around us. The weather was beautiful and there was still plenty of daylight for hiking. However, we were tired from a long day of driving and decided to wait until the next morning to hike.

Hiking Skerwink Trail

Tom and I woke to overcast skies. It was perfect hiking weather except for the fog.

The loop trail led us uphill and around the tip of a peninsula. Through the fog, we could see enough to know it’s beautiful with rugged cliffs and rock formations. We could only imagine how amazing it would look with blue skies and sunshine. Fortunately, as we made our way back from the tip of the peninsula, the fog started lifting. We climbed to an overlook on a hill in the center of the peninsula and watched the fog dissipate, revealing beautiful views in every direction. As we continued down from the cliffs, the trail led us to a beautiful beach. The perfect way to cool off after a beautiful hike.

Tom and I enjoyed the Skerwink trail so much, we decided to return on Saturday if we had time before attending the dinner theater.  But, first, we were off to visit Elliston and Bonavista.

Attending Shenanigans Dinner Theatre

After two nights of camping and exploring Elliston and Bonavista at the tip of the Bonavista Peninsula, Tom and I returned to Trinity for the Shenanigans Dinner Theatre performance at the Rising Tide Theatre. We didn’t have enough time to hike the Skerwink trail, again, because it’s located in East Trinity, on the opposite side of the cove from Trinity. Instead, we drove to the theatre early to find a good (big enough) place to park.

Tom and I took Aly as we walked the historic streets of Trinity. And, even before we stopped for a treat at Sweet Rock Homemade Ice Cream, overlooking Trinity, I declared Trinity my favorite town on the island. It’s absolutely beautiful in every direction. If I lived in Newfoundland, it would be here!

After exploring the beautiful town, Tom and I cleaned up for dinner. The dinner theatre, Rising Tide,  was just a 5 minute walk from where we parked our camper. The entrance to the theatre has beautiful views of the harbor. Inside, we enjoyed great food and a wonderful performance with traditional Newfoundland music and humor.
