Exploring Point Amour Lighthouse Provincial Historic Site

Point Amour Lighthouse was one of my favorite attractions so far. Maybe because I like lighthouses. Or maybe because it was a sunny day with blue skies and beautiful views in all directions. Or maybe because we also saw a whale and an iceberg during our visit to Point Amour.

We first spotted the iceberg as we drove past Point Amour on our way to Red Bay that morning. This was a different iceberg than the one at our boondocking site. As soon as we pulled into the parking lot for the Point Amour Lighthouse, we walked out to the cliff to take pictures of the iceberg. But, before we snapped our first iceberg picture, we saw a whale surface.  Both the iceberg and lighthouse had to wait while we watched the whale swim past.

I’ve visited other lighthouse towers but Point Amour is the first one I’ve seen with the house intact and accessible. The rooms were decorated with relevant artifacts and furniture. Additional exhibits described the light technology and a long history of shipwrecks. Because of the many deadly shipwrecks, Point Amour (Love Point) was originally called Pointe-aux-Morts (Dead Man's Point).
