Exploring Red Bay National Historic Site

Tom and I visited the Red Bay National  Historic Site during our drive along Labrador’s Southern Coast. In addition to being one of Canada’s National Historic Sites, Red Bay is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

We started our visit in the Right Whale Museum with exhibits describing the Basque whaling industry. It displays artifacts discovered in Red Bay dating back to the 16th century. After exploring the museum, we joined a tour to Saddle Island where many of the artifacts were uncovered. The short boat ride across Red Bay is included with museum admission and Aly was happy to learn dogs are welcome.

On Saddle Island, our tour guide led us down a long boardwalk as he pointed out the significance of different areas. He described the history of shipwrecks and pointed out approximately where they were discovered in the bay.
