Exploring Tombstone

We enjoyed an afternoon of exploring Tombstone, Arizona after our morning in Bisbee.

It’s only a 25 minute drive between them.

The wild west town of Tombstone, Arizona is best known for a deadly shootout involving Wyatt Earp and Doc Holiday. The famous shootout was the inspiration for multiple movies including Shootout at the O.K. Corral and Tombstone just to name a few.

The main street is closed to traffic making it easy for visitors to stand in the middle of the dirt road and imagine themselves witnessing a wildwest gunfight. You can even purchase tickets to watch a reenactment at the O.K. Corral. That’s on my list for the next time we visit Tombstone. Also on my list is a historic tour on the stagecoach. In fact, I’ll start saving up so I can do everything on this list!

The streets and many of the shops are dog-friendly. A tour guide from the Birdcage Theatre welcomed us to bring Aly to the theatre lobby where she gave a free introduction to the theatre’s history. I didn’t ask if dogs are allowed in the back of the theatre for the more in-depth tours requiring tickets… but I’m guessing not.

We stopped for a drink at Big Nose Kate's, one of several saloons in Tombstone. The employees dress in saloon-style costumes. We enjoyed listening to live country music and taking pictures inside a coffin. Bring your sense of humor because only your mourners (and the rest of the saloon) get to see your epitaph!

A spiral staircase in the middle of Big Nose Kate's leads down to The Shaft where you can purchase souvenirs and wild west clothing. I couldn’t resist trying on some of the dresses! Anyone want to guess my next Halloween costume?

There’s so much to do in Tombstone, we could easily spend an entire day or even a weekend. Especially, when we include the shopping and saloon-hopping!
