South Padre Island, Texas or Bust Day 19

On Day 19 of our RV trip to South Padre Island, Texas, Tom drove into Harlingen to get new tires then we drove out to the SpaceX Starbase launch site in Boca Chica.

Highlights

It was chilly and extremely windy when we woke up. It was too windy to play pickleball and I expected the Beach Bodies workout to be cancelled as well. But, I should have known better. I think it would have to be pouring rain with gale force winds for our fearless leader to cancel! I could hear the sound of "Fight Song" blowing my direction as I returned to our camper from a late morning walk on the beach with Aly. I knew the workout group would be kickboxing to that music and I could see them from our back door. I instantly regretted missing the workout!

Tom used the windy morning to drive to Harlingen for new truck tires. After our scary blowout on the way down, he decided to upgrade both of the front tires to the best ones he could find. While he ran a few errands on his way back to the island, I met some of our new friends at Laguna Bob for live music. The duo, Chrome Wheels, was playing on the deck and it was relatively sheltered from the wind.

After Tom's long drive to Harlingen that morning, I was surprised when he suggested we drive out to see Starbase, the SpaceX launch facility in Boca Chica, Texas late that afternoon. Starbase is only about a half mile across the water from our RV park and clearly visible from our campsite. It's a short ride by boat but almost an hour by car. We had to drive to the outskirts of Brownsville then out toward Boca Chica Beach. It's about 40 miles each way from South Padre Island but well worth the drive. We were amazed at how close we could get to the buildings and the launch pad. We could see a rocket being assembled on the launch pad. And, when we looked across the water from our campsite the following day, we could see the that the top of the rocket was now in place.

Challenges

The wind was the worst part of the day but it was mostly sunny. We enjoyed a beautiful sunset over Boca Chica as we left Starbase behind us.
