South Padre Island, Texas or Bust Day 3

On Day 3 of our RV trip to Texas, Tom and I learned that we would be stranded near Trinidad until Monday while the RAM dealer continues to work on our truck. The RAM dealer offered for us to stay at the local Hilton but we'd rather be in our camper at the RV park with all our stuff and lots of space for Aly to run. We did, however, take them up on the offer for a loaner car. We could use our Jeep, but it's loaded with stuff that we'd prefer not to haul around or unload.

Highlights

Tom and I have often commented about how beautiful this area is as we pass through Trinidad on our way to other destinations. We always vowed to take time to explore this part of Colorado on a "future trip". The time has come. So, that's a highlight, right?

After picking up our loaner car, Tom and I chased Aly around the RV park to ensure she would be too tired to destroy our camper. We left her with a chew toy stuffed with peanut butter and kibble while we set out to explore Trinidad.

In Trinidad, Tom and I enjoyed great Mexican food at Mission at the Bell then explored the shops along Main Street to walk off our food coma. And, to help celebrate our long weekend in Southern Colorado, we stopped at a local liquor store.

As Tom and I drove back to our camper at Gears RV Park, we saw the turnoff for the Ludlow Massacre Memorial. We'd talked about visiting the memorial on many previous trips. This time we finally turned off!

Perhaps the biggest highlight of our day was returning to our camper to find Aly asleep and nothing damaged. Our little girl has grown up so much since our trip to South Padre Island last January!

Challenges

The nights are cold here at 6,300 feet in the Colorado Rockies. Fortunately, we're at Gears RV Park with full hookups. When we first pulled into our RV site, Tom didn't bother hooking up the water because the faucet was partially frozen and we had filled our fresh water tank before leaving home. That would easily provide us enough water until we hit the road again. Right?

Normally we wait to fill our water tank until we get far enough south to avoid it freezing. But, on this trip we planned to reach the Texas border by the first night, thus avoiding any chance of our tanks freezing. Oops. Something must have frozen our first night stranded here in the snowstorm. Our water pump will no longer pump water from our fresh water tank to the faucets. We'll have to deal with that later. For now, the faucet at the RV park thawed enough for us to get fresh water from there. Yay! Showers!
