South Padre Island, Texas or Bust Day 7

On Day 7 of our RV trip to Texas, Tom and I drove less than 200 miles from our boondocking site at our friend's house in San Antonio to Port Aransas, Texas.

Highlights

Tom and I woke early in the morning and were on the road by 6am. We had to cross through the middle of San Antonio and were determined to beat rush hour traffic. Traffic was already building as we approached downtown but we had a smooth drive and were relieved to finally reach the gulf coast of Texas. We caught up with our friends, Dennis and Wendy, boondocking on the beach in Port Aransas after losing them almost a week earlier due to our mechanical delay near Trinidad, Colorado.

In Port Aransas, we enjoyed a long walk on the beach with beautiful kites flying overhead. We also enjoyed a few well-deserved drinks on the beach and barhopping through town. Our drive from San Antonio had been relatively short, but not uneventful.

Challenges

While driving on Interstate 37, about halfway between San Antonio and Port Aransas, Tom noticed our truck pulling a bit to the right. He thought it might be the slope of the highway in the right lane. But, before he could fully process it, we heard a big bang and a lot of rumbling as our right front tire blew and shredded down the highway. Tom kept his cool and got us safely to the shoulder. Tom and I struggled to change the heavy tire, between his recent shoulder surgery and my recent back problems. Fortunately, an incredibly friendly young man, Dale, quickly pulled up and offered to help. We were happy to accept his help. And, as big trucks whizzed by the left side of our truck, we were all grateful that it was the right tire that blew. With Dale's help we were on our way much faster than had we done it ourselves or waited the estimated one hour for AAA Roadside Assistance. Thanks Dale!

Aly was stressed from the moment the tire blew. She was shaking and panting heavily from there all the way to Port Aransas and didn't calm down until her toes hit the sand... The day's stress was instantly forgotten!
