Visiting Corner Brook, Newfoundland

Tom and I stopped for a night in Corner Brook on our way to Port aux Basque. We boondocked at the local Elks Lodge for one night. The lodge, located near the center of town, has a good size parking lot but it's not huge. However, we learned from a local member that the lodge is essentially closed for the summer so it was no problem for us to park there.

Since the Elks Lodge was closed, Tom and I walked a few blocks to explore the bars and restaurants on Broadway. We'd been driving all day with only eachother to talk to and were hoping to find a lively bar. We stopped at both The 86 Pub and 74 Broadway Pub. Unfortunately, it was a Sunday evening and both pubs were dead and we didn't stay long. Instead, we picked up Chinese food to go from Dragon Restaurant and called it a night.

The following day Tom and I took advantage of our boondocking location in the center of town. We did laundry at a laundromat right next to the Elks Lodge and we walked Aly to a nearby dog park several times. It started raining during one of our visits to the dog park and, with typical Newfoundland hospitality, someone at the park offered us a ride back to our camper. We were happy we accepted because the skies opened and began pouring just as got into our camper.

After the storm passed, Tom and I walked to the Captain James Cook Historic Site. The site is on top of a hill with incredible views of Corner Brook and the Bay of Islands. Several plaques around the site describe the history of Captain Cook and his relevance to New Foundland. One of my favorite was a comparison between the map Cook charted in the 1700's and one created with modern technolory. It's amazing how accurate Cook was with the minimal tools that were available at the time.
