Zion National Park or Bust Days 1-9

Tom and I hit the road for another trip, but not together. Tom left before me, with the camper, to fish the San Juan River in New Mexico. I met up with him a week later in Durango to start our journey to Zion National Park in Southern Utah.

Highlights

Tom and his friend, Steve, enjoyed a successful week of fishing on the San Juan River below Navajo Lake in Northern New Mexico. They stayed at Cottonwood Campground with easy access to the river and plenty of fish and wild turkeys for entertainment.

I spent the week catching up on things around the house then set out to catch up with Tom. I was happy to spend my first night visiting my daughter in Gunnison before meeting Tom in Durango. The drive between Ouray and Durango was spectacular but I was too busy driving the windy roads to take pictures.

We hooked up the Jeep to our truck in the Durango Walmart parking lot and I was happy to relinquish my driving duties and return to being a passenger/photographer. From Durango we crossed into New Mexico then Arizona where we boondocked at the Walmart in Page, Arizona.

After a rainy and windy night in Page Arizona, Tom and I took our time leaving in the morning. We enjoyed Easter breakfast in our camper with banana pecan pancakes and a chocolate Easter bunny. Tom and I originally planned to head straight to Zion National Park from Page. That route would have led us along Southern Utah and west on Highway 9 into Zion. But, because we got a late start, we decided to head for the St. George area to visit one of Tom's friends and former colleagues, Walter. That route led us south, crisscrossing the Utah/Arizon border several times. We visited Pipe Springs National Monument along the way and arrived at Walter's place just in time for him to join us for an Easter dinner of Swiss Cheese Fondue.
