Driving from Deer Lake to Twillingate, Newfoundland

After exploring Gros Morne National Park, on Newfoundland’s west coast, Tom and I traveled east to visit central Newfoundland. We took Route 1 east to Notre Dame Junction then we headed north on Route 340 to North Twillingate Island.

Traveling from Deer Lake to Notre Dame Junction

Our drive along Route 1 from Deer Lake to Notre Dame Junction wasn’t as scenic as our drives along the west coast. It was still lush with trees and rolling hills but the views of lakes and rivers were fewer and farther between. I commented to Tom that there doesn’t seem to be much water in Central Newfoundland . He laughed and pointed to his GPS on the dashboard. There was plenty of water! We just couldn’t see it through the dense trees! But when we did see a break in the trees, the vies were beautiful. Tom was especially excited when we crossed over the river and it was full of fishermen. What does that mean? The salmon are running! The salmon are running!

We stopped a few times along our drive for supplies. We’d been running low on fresh food and were happy to find a decent sized grocery store in Deer Lake. We stopped again for a few more supplies in Grand Falls before turning off Route 1 (the Trans-Canada Highway) toward Twillingate.

After Tom saw all the fishermen in the river, we considered whether we should head straight to Gander, one of the top salmon fishing locations in Newfoundland. We texted friends that we’d met traveling here. One couple was currently in Gander and another was in Twillingate. The one in Gander said the fishing guides were really booked and they couldn’t get one until the following week. They also told us Twillingate was a must see. So, after resupplying in Grand Falls, we headed for Twillingate.

The drive along Route 340 was beautiful with endless views of rivers, lakes, and bays. We crossed several bridges as we traveled from the main island to Twillingate South Island then Twillingate North Island. We had no reservations or particular plans but our other friends were currently on the north island so that’s where we headed.
