Exploring Gros Morne National Park, Newfoundland

Tom and I enjoyed 3 beautiful days exploring Gros Morne National Park. Gros Morne is a big beautiful park and we could have spent several weeks exploring everything. During our three days there, we explored Shallow Bay, Broom Point, Western Brook Pond, Green Point, Lobster Cove, and Southeast Brook Falls.

The park is located along Route 430 on the west coast of Newfoundland and is broken up in small areas around local communities. Tom and I boondocked in two of these communities; one night in St. Paul’s near the north end of the park and one night in Norris Point near the south end of the park.

Visiting Shallow Bay

Shallow Bay is near Cow Head at the north end of the park and has a beautiful sandy beach. Nice facilities near the beach parking lot included a picnic area, restrooms and showers. A boardwalk leads from there to the beach. It might have been crowded earlier in the day, but when we visited, in the evening, we had big stretches of the beach to ourselves.

Visiting Broom Point

By the time Tom and I arrived at Broom Point, a former fishing site, the building was closed for the night. But we still had plenty of daylight and enjoyed walking around the premises.

Visiting Western Brook Pond

The highlight of our visit to Gros Morne National Park was a boat tour through the beautiful gorge on Western Brook Pond. We started with a short hike from the parking lot to the boat dock. The well maintained trail was an easy and relatively flat walk. For anyone that didn't want to walk the trail, golf cart shuttles were available.

Once the boat entered the gorge, the views were beautiful in every direction. My favorite was a big waterfall that cascaded down a rocky face and off the cliff into the water. Our captain guided the boat considerably close to the falling water for breathtaking views.

Visiting Green Point

For some visitors, the highlight of Green Point might be its geological significance or the beautiful campground along the rocky cliffs. For us it was the dog park! Unfortunately, Aly was the only dog at the time but she enjoyed honing her skills on the obstacle course.

Visiting Lobster Cove Head

We visited the Lobster Cove Head Lighthouse at Rocky Harbor. Exhibits in the former lightkeepers home decribed its history and displayed relevant artifacts. Unfortunately, the tower was closed to visitors but several hiking trails led around the lighthouse and the surrounding grounds.

Visiting Southeast Brook Falls

Our last stop in Gros Morne National Park was a short hike to Southeast Brook Falls.
