Traveling Across Northern Colorado June 2023

Leaving our home in Colorado, Tom and I headed west on Highway 24 then north on Highway 9 to cross the Continental Divide at Hoosier Pass. We continued north on Highway 9, across Interstate 70, until we reached Kremmling, Colorado. From Kremmling we took Highway 40 west then Highway 14 northeast to Walden where we caught Highway 125 north to Cowdrey Reservoir.

Sites along the way

As we approached Hartsel on Highway 24, we passed a huge herd of Bison. The skies were cloudy but it wasn’t storming. When we passed through Alma, just 20 minutes later, the ground was covered with fresh hail. We were happy to miss have missed that hail storm!

We passed several large reservoirs along the way and were thrilled to see the highest water levels we’ve seen in years! With the ongoing Spring runoff, Dillon reservoir was noticeably higher than when we passed it last month. And Green Mountain reservoir looked like a different lake from when we camped there a few years ago! I hadn’t even noticed Wolford Mountain Reservoir during previous trips but it was filled to the brim and impossible to miss on this trip!

Boondocking at Cowdrey Reservoir

We enjoyed a great night boondocking at Cowdrey Reservoir just south of the Colorado/Wyoming state line. We found a perfect spot near the water with plenty of privacy. There was only one other camper.

When we first arrived Tom was disappointed to see no sign of fish in the water. Then the bugs came out and the fish started jumping!

In addition to fish, we saw lots of geese, a pelican, and a beaver.

But the most active wildlife was Aly!

Aly ran, jumped, and explored until there was nothing she could do but rest! She thinks this is the best campsite EVER!

The clouds started clearing just in time for us to enjoy a beautiful sunset.

We’ll definitely return to this fabulous site in the future!
