Cannon Beach, Oregon or Bust Day 1

Tom and I didn't drive far on Day 1 of our RV trip to Cannon Beach, Oregon. We left home a day earlier than we originally planned so that we could meet up with one of my oldest friends. I've known Denise since we worked together in high school. She and her husband were camping at Cherry Creek State Park, near Denver, this week, so we joined them for a night.

Sights along the way

As Tom and I headed north on Interstate 25 through Colorado Springs, we caught a glimpse of the new United States Air Force Academy Visitor Center and Hotel. North of Colorado Springs, we passed through the town of Castle Rock. There's no question where its name comes from! Before reaching Denver, we veered east to Cherry Creek State Park.

Cherry Creek State Park

I've been to Cherry Creek Reservoir several times, many years ago, but I'd never camped there. I was a bit surprised (and disappointed) that the campground is so far from the lake. I was hoping to kayak but given the short time we were there, Tom and I decided it wasn't worth the hassle to pack up the camper and drive our kayaks to the shore. Instead, Tom took a short bike ride along the many great bike paths and I explored the campground with Aly.

Cherry Creek Campground is beautiful with plenty of big shade trees. It has six loops with individual campsites plus three group campsite loops. The sites vary from full-hookups to tent sites. Several nice restroom/shower buildings are located across the campground and one even has a nice laundry room and, more importantly, vending machines that include ice cream!

After a short afternoon rainstorm, Tom and I enjoyed a beautiful evening with Denise and her husband, Drake... not to mention their adorable pups! We shared smores and roasted Twinkies around the campfire and even caught a preview of the upcoming Super Blue Moon of 2023.

While reconnecting with my old friend was my favorite activity in Cherry Creek State Park, Aly's was visiting the Cherry Creek Dog Park. I must admit it's one of my all-time favorite dog parks... right up there with the one we discovered in Bend, Oregon. The Cherry Creek Dog Park borders Cherry Creek giving dogs and their humans the perfect way to keep cool on a hot summer day!
