Colorado to Utah April 2023

Tom and I got a late start on our road-trip to Oregon after waking up to snow that morning. We took our time to finish packing the camper, giving the snow a chance to melt from the roads. Even with our late start, we managed to make it as far as Thompson Springs, Utah.

We enjoyed beautiful blue skies and fresh snow on mountains as we headed west on Highway 24 then north on Highway 9 toward Fairplay, Colorado.

We passed through the famous South Park region and started our climb up Hoosier Pass toward Breckenridge.

The views at the top of Hoosier Pass were breathtaking as we crossed the Continental Divide at an elevation of 11,539 feet (3,517 m).

Our beautiful views continued as we dropped down Hoosier Pass into the ski-town of Breckenridge.

We connected to Interstate 70 at Frisco, Colorado and, as we heeded West on I-70, we left Dillon Reservoir and the Continental Divide behind us.

We continued past more ski resorts including Copper Mountain, Vail, and Beaver Creek.

When we reached the town of Avon, just west of Vail, we stopped for a break at a local dog park. The Wildridge Dog Park is located high on a ridge overlooking Beaver Creek Ski Area. Aly enjoyed playing with her new friend, Thor, while we enjoyed the beautiful views and perfect weather.

Continuing west on Interstate 70 led us through Glenwood Canyon. We drove alongside the Colorado River past the Hanging Lake trailhead, one of my favorite hikes in Colorado. We crossed the Utah state line as the sun set.

It was dark when we arrived at the Utah Welcome Center along Interstate 70 in Thompson Springs, UT. We’d never boondocked there before but there was plenty of room in their large parking lot and we were tired. When we woke the next morning, we were happy to discover hiking trails leading from the rest area to the top of the nearby bluffs. It was perfect for a morning hike with Aly before hitting the road again.
