Nevada to Oregon May 2023

Tom, Sierra, and I continued our journey to Oregon from our boondocking spot near Golconda Summit in Nevada. We hit the road relatively early, heading west on Interstate 80. We turned off at Winnemucca taking Highway 95 north then 140 west.

Rest Area

We stopped for a quick break at Leonard Creek Rest Area along Highway 140. It’s not a particularly nice rest area but it does have an outhouse, covered picnic tables and a large open space for a puppy to stretch her legs.

Bog Hot Springs

Not long after passing Denio Junction on Highway 140, we turned right on an unmarked dirt road that led us to Bog Hot Springs. This is one of many free, undeveloped hot springs in the Hiking Hot Springs in the Pacific Northwest book that Sierra brought along. While many of the hot springs described in the book require hiking, Bog Hot Springs is easily accessible by vehicle. There’s plenty of room for parking and turning around, even for large RVs and trailers. We took advantage of the opportunity to fly Sierra's drone and create a video of the area.

We enjoyed a beautiful May Day eating lunch and relaxing in the hot springs.

We had a large stretch of the creek to ourselves giving Aly some freedom to enjoy the springs too. Although, she wasn’t sure what to think of the hot water!

Crossing into Oregon

After spending more time than we expected at Bog Hot Springs, we continued our drive west on Highway 140 toward the Oregon border. We drove past beautiful vistas, overflowing lakes, and raging rivers. We were driving into a storm and wanted to find a place to camp for the night.

Camping in Lake View

We found a campsite at the Wild Goose Meadows RV Park just outside Lakeview, Oregon. To celebrate the luxury of unlimited electricity and hot water, we cooked a gourmet dinner. It included caprese salad, butternut squash ravioli, and a delicious cabernet sauvignon served in dixie cups… Living the dream!

We woke the next morning to snow. Fortunately it melted quickly and we were back on the road.
