Traveling through Utah April 2023

After a good night’s sleep and morning hike at the Utah Welcome Center, Tom and I continued our drive west on Interstate 70 for a short distance.

We stopped briefly at the Maverik in Green River, Utah. In addition to offering reasonably priced fuel, they have a free RV dump station. With a full fuel tank, empty holding tanks and a tired dog, we were ready for our next adventure.

Impromptu Detour from Interstate 70

My daughter, Sierra, planned to catch up with us in Utah but she got a late start leaving Colorado. Since, she was counting on sleeping in our camper that night, we didn’t want to get too far ahead of her. We found a great place to spend the day while we waited for Sierra to catch up… Capitol Reef National Park!

After passing through Green River on I-70, we took the Highway 24 route through the park.

Capitol Reef National Park

Like most US National Parks, Capitol Reef is not particularly dog-friendly. Dogs are allowed wherever vehicles can go but they are not allowed on most hiking trails. Fortunately many of the attractions are easily accessible from pullouts along the road. So we managed to enjoy much of the park, even with Aly.

We visited several historic buildings, petroglyphs, and panoramic overlooks. My favorite activity was my solo hike to Hickman Bridge. It was a relatively short hike; about 2 miles out-and-back from the parking lot. While I hiked, Aly kept the camper safe from strangers and Tom kept the camper safe from Aly.

Capitol Reef to Delta

From Capitol Reef National Park, we continued west on Highway 24 heading toward the snow-covered mountains and leaving the red rocks of the park behind us.

Aly had the entire back seat to herself. But, unless the window was open, she preferred the views from the front.

We crossed over I-70 heading north then onto Highway 50 west as we zigzagged our way through farming communities and toward our next destination… Great Basin National Park.

Boondocking near Delta, Utah

Tom and I stopped for the night near Delta, Utah. We found a nice dirt parking lot just outside town, off Highway 50. Another camper was already parked there and there was plenty of room for more. My daughter caught up with us that night ready to join the adventure.
