Utah to Nevada April 2023

Tom, Sierra and I continued west on Highway 50 after our night of boondocking near Delta, Utah. I rode with Sierra in her car while Aly enjoyed riding shotgun with Tom.

Great Basin National Park

We met at the Great Basin National Park Visitor Center to plan our day after learning about our options from the park rangers.

When we entered the Visitor Center parking lot, we were surprised it was nearly empty on this beautiful weekend. Inside, we discovered why! Many of the roads in the park were closed because of the record April snowfalls that hit the Great Basin and much of the Pacific Region. Our best hiking options included a muddy walk along a hiking trail or a long walk on a closed paved road which led to deep snow. The best attractions, given the limited driving and hiking conditions, were the Lehman Cave Tours. Unfortunately, they were fully booked.

Sierra and I started the long hike up the closed road toward Wheeler Peak while Tom got a head-start on the drive toward Oregon. After about an hour of walking on the paved road, Sierra and I decided our effort was best saved for a future visit where we could experience the park under better conditions.

Great Basin to Golconda

Tom’s GPS led him north on Highway 93 from Highway 50 to connect with Interstate 80 at Wells, Nevada. As Tom headed west on I-80, he was far enough ahead of us to take Aly to the Elko City Dog Park.

The route Sierra and I followed led us west on Highway 50 to Eureka then north on 278 to intersect I-80 at Carlin, Nevada.

As we followed each other west on I-80, the sun set over the horizon and we were ready to find a place to sleep for the night.

Boondocking at Golconda Summit

We found a great spot to boondock off Exit 200 at Golconda Summit. There is paved truck parking on both sides of the highway. We wanted to be farther from the running engines of the big rigs so we found a quite corner in a nearby dirt lot.
